Skinning phones is my favorite way of protecting them; prevention is better than cure. Dbrand skins add grip to your device will prevent it from dropping and thus avoiding scratching or even breaking it. Besides adding grip to your device it also makes your device look totally awesome and make it stand out from the crowd. Dbrand, which is run by robots apparently, is one of the bigger companies when it comes to skins. Let’s see if they’re worth purchasing for your device, íf they’re available for your phone.
With that, we come to the first point. Availability. When you check dbrand’s website you find out that they don’t offer skins for too many devices. All iPhones, most high-end Android smartphones, some MacBooks, some laptops, gaming consoles and, surprisingly, some Audio-Technica headphones. If you have a high-end Android smartphone you probably are able to get a skin, if you have a somewhat cheaper phone from a less noticed brand you’re probably out of luck. Competitors, Slickwraps for instance, often offer a wider variety of devices.
Dbrand started in 2011 as a small business that made skins for the iPhone, which de-branded (de-branding, dbrand: you get it) them. The skins hid the Apple-logo and added some personality to the device. Since then they grew fast and sell quite a few skins every day. Since the beginning of the company, dbrand claims to have the most precise fit on earth.
A sticker? On my phone?
At first, it seems pretty unusual, but I prefer those ‘stickers’ over cases. Dbrand skins are not just your everyday stickers, they’re made out of premium 3M vinyl. Skins mostly are used to protect your phone against scratches or just to make it look nicer. Skins won’t add any protection when you drop them down the stairs, but it will protect your expensive device against scratches. Add a screen protector to that and you have a pretty solid protection without the bulk of a case.
Applying the skin
A skin can really enhance the looks of your device, but if you can’t apply them properly and easily they won’t look nice. Thankfully dbrand knows that, so they make an easy to follow installation guide for each device. Even if you screw it up, you can easily remove the skin and try again. Overall the skins are easy to apply but take your time to get the best result.
Precision and quality
‘The most precise fit on earth’ is something to take seriously. Dbrand skins are very, very precisely cut. On some devices, you won’t even be able to see that it has a skin applied, they just melt in the rest of the device (after a short period of usage). Don’t take my word for it, check out the gallery added to the bottom of this article to find out yourself. When you first apply the skin they will feel a bit rough around the edges, but that will disappear after a while of usage.
The quality of the skins is really nice, they have a nice texture to them. Especially the Black Dragon skins feel really nice (Personally I don’t really like the look though). One thing to note is that the skins are not made out of real materials. The wooden skins aren’t made of wood, metal skins are not made of metal, leather skins are not made of leather and the black dragon skins are not made of dragon skins (dûh). The skins certainly have a texture to them that imitates the real material, which is nice.
The skins dbrand offers are not really expensive. You’ll find a skin for the back of your phone for around $10. That’s a lot of money to ask for a ‘sticker’, but when you compare it to other companies (Slickwraps for instance, where you’ll pay about $20 for a skin for your phone) it’s not expensive.
Shipping is free when you spend more than $20, normally shippings costs $5. Dbrand also offers some really fast shipping via FedEx. Pay $19,99 extra and your skins will arrive in about 3-5 days depending on where you live. Normal shipping will take around a week, again: depending on where you live. For the exact pricing and more information on shipping, check their website.
In conclusion: Dbrand skins can really enhance the protection and look of your device(s). The skins are really precisely cut and will melt into the device as if it belongs there. The price is low compared to other companies.
